I just wondered what the normal height is of a cake before you start adding in supports??

I'm going to be doing one in a few weeks that in total will be 21cm high (approx 8.5 inches). How many support layers should there be? I was only going to do one roughly half height. Is that enough???

I would think that would suffice. I mean, 4" is standard for a single tier.

The general rule of thumb is every 4" vertical = need for support.
