i need some ideas for a harry potter cake that i could use buttercream icing with (chocolate or vanilla) and the cake batter-flavor doesn't matter either.

You could make a stack of books with the titles of the HP series on them. Also, on Cakewrecks.com they did a HP theme for their Sunday Sweets column and are doing more HP cakes tomorrow morning. http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2009/07/sunday-sweets-harry-potter.html
