Hi! I'm new on this board. It seems to have many experts in cake decorating so I decided to pause my question here.
One of my favorite combination of cake is chocolate cake and vanilla icing (shortening and sugar icing). But the icing always seems to take the chocolate cake taste. I was wondering if anyone has a idea as how to prevent the icing to take the taste cake ? Will a glaze before icing do that?

Thank you.

P.S sorry english is not my first language.

Welcome to cake central. I have never heard of this happening before. Do you like the icing you use or are you looking to change it?

No I love my icing recipe (Just plain shortening with sugar icing and vanilla extract). Though I forgot to mention that I use Duncan Hines mix. Could it be the problem?

No, using a box mix should have nothing to do with it. It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong. Do others agree that the frosting is taking on the flavor of the cake?
