Is there a trick to this? Or do you all just toss it on there?

You can put them on one at a time in a pretty pattern, or you can fill a bowl or plate and, with one hand holding the cake at an angle over the container, with the other hand grab handfuls of nuts and press into the icing. The nuts that don't stick fall back into the container. Keep turning the cake in your hand until the sides are as encrusted as you want. You can then fill any holes with individual nuts. It's awkward but that's how it works.

Did that make sense?

I usually grab a handful and then press them on the sides. Sometimes I just throw it onto the cake.
