If I bake 2 cakes that are each 2 inches tall and want to put a filling between them and stack them so I have a 4 inch tall cake, do I have to have supports like dowels or cake boards?
TIA

I wouldn't think so. I don't do it. I guess if you are transporting it, you could if you wanted.

no. usually only if a cake is over 4 inches do you need to start thinking about support.
