Fondant On Room Temperature Or Cooled Buttercream?

I made my first attempt at putting fondant on a cake last night and it went okay. The only problem I had was that the icing squished out the bottom of the cake when I pushed the fondant into place. Did I use too much BC or should I have chilled the BC-covered cake for a few minutes and then put on the fondant?
