Fondant Ribbon... Wedding Cake Today!

Ok, so I'm having trouble attaching the fondant ribbon to my smooth buttercream cake! It's Satin Ice fondant. But I had to color it burgundy, so I'm afraid it's a little soft. I can't get it to stop tearing when I try to pick it up!

So do I let it get a little hard first? do I roll it out a little thicker? Also ... I can't get the ribbons long enough not to have seems! The bottom tier is 14inch ... is 4 separate fondant ribbons too many seems!! Please give me your best tips!! I'm running out of time.

Have you tried Gum paste instead of fondant? That usually dries quicker. I'm not sure how much time you have, but I'd let them dry as long as possible, or they will absorb some of the moisture from the BC and be flat.

I wasn't worried sbout it drying on the cake ... I can't pick it up off of the mat to put it on the cake without it tearing! Do you think if I add gumpaste it would be too hard to cut through?? thanks the for the help!!

how are you picking the ribbon up?? i always roll up my ribbons and the attach then once i have one part on the cake i just continue to roll the ribbon around the cake. I would do as little seams as possible, i did one last night that has two seams but you couldnt really see them .

oh I see. Sounds like you added so much coloring that it made the fondant too moist. You could add a little PS to help with the consistancy, if you want to use only fondant, or mix half fondant half gumpaste.

If you roll up the ribbon like that Bubbletape candy, then unroll it onto the cake, you shouldn't have any tearing issues.

ok, so I'm adding PS to the fondant and hopefully it will get back to a better consistency. Now about the 14inch one. Where to do roll it out to make it long enough?? Maybe just grease the counter top and go the distance? Then do you put cornstarch or anything when you roll it to prevent it sticking? Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the help! I still have about 2 hours, so I feel a little stressed, but I'm good ... I think! icon_smile.gif

It may be too late, but yes I dust it VERY lightly with cornstarch to prevent sticking when I roll it up. Usually on my larger tiers, I will make the ribbon in two pieces. I simply don't have the counter space for long pieces like that.
