I am wondering something. I have never covered a cake in fondant. My family would hate it because they love buttercream. All my friends I have made cakes for like buttercream too. That being said, other than the fact that fondant looks good and is all the rage now, how do you get over the chewy part and the taste? I just think buttercream is so far superior. Is it mostly the look for you all that makes it most everyones favorite. I wish they would show a cake challange with buttercream only.

there is alot more you can do with fondant that you can't do with buttercream That being said 99% of my cakes are buttercream. I do use a lot of chocolate, fondant, and gumpaste accents. But the base icing is nearly always buttercream.

Most people don't mind chewing the "candy" that is on the cake, but they don't want to chew the icing that covers it.
