I have been getting little holes in my buttercream after I have put it on the cake. I think I read somewhere that I should beable to mist the cake with water and then smooth out. Is this correct? What am I doing wrong to cause this. The following is the recipe I am using:
1 stick of butter
1/2 stick of Crisco
4 Cups of powdered sugar
3-4 Tbsp of cream.
Sounds like you have air bubbles in it. You may be mixing it on too high a speed and incorporating air into it. Air does not smooth out.
Ignore the part where it says 'beat for x minutes.' If it only comes part way up your beaters, you're putting air bubbles in it. Try mixing only as long as necessary, and see if that fixes the problem.
The recipe sounds fine, I use one almost like it with maybe a Tablespoon less liquid.
