Dowel Rods Before Or After Fondant

I am making a stacked cake 12" 10" and 8" do I put the dowel rods in before I put the fondant on or after?

I put the dowels in when I'm ready to stack the cake. So afer the fondant is on.

And if I'm using dowels, I also drive one huge dowel through all layers of the cake. So you will want to put something on the top tier, where the hole is left from the dowel.

I put them in after the fondant is on. I also cover them in thin aluminum foil. It's quick and easy, then the wood doesn't touch my moist cake. Wood/cake - not a good combination.
