Hey all! I finally got some pictures of our wedding cake and couldn't wait to share it with you all. It took a lot of time and I only had 3 hours of sleep the night before but I wouldn't have traded the experience for anything! I'm so glad I chose to do my own cake. So many people advised me against it and thought it was a horrible mistake but it just made my accomplishment even more rewarding.
I made the SMBC and cakes weeks ahead and froze them. The gumpaste flowers were made months prior. Then Friday I did all the decorating (and had to make another batch of SMBC) and finished the cake Saturday at the reception site. I used SPS to stack but left the 4" off since there is no plate for that size available. Carrying it was a pain. It was super heavy and I goofed and put the 12" cakeboard on a thicker cardboard and it ended up sliding everywhere; I should've glued it but now I know!
The cake facts: 12-10-8-6-4". Pink confetti with white chocolate filling; chocolate with white chocolate raspberry filling; carrot with cream cheese; chocolate mocha hazelnut; choc with choc (the anniv. tier if it survives).
The things I hated about the experience: stacking the cakes without touching the buttercream . I goofed because I was so excited about stacking and stacked the 8" and 6" before stacking the 8". Then I couldn't get them apart so I had to stack both on the 10". That was at 1 am and I hit pure panic mode because I thought I was never going to get them on without messing up the icing or dropping the cakes. My other cake friend helped me out with that (but pure panic!! I'd never done that before!).
Transporting the cake was awful. My dad was going to help because the cake was too heavy (4 tiered stack) for me to carry. After all my "don't touch the icing" warnings, he stuck his hand in one of the tiers so I had to fix that (thankfully it was in the back). Carrying it to the car my strength gave way and my uncle thankfully grabbed it and we got it into the van. My friend sat with it because I was afraid the cake would slide off the plate and she got so scared because the cake was wobbling that she ended up carving the top of the 6" out by holding onto the supports. At the church, my dad refused to carry it so I ended up hauling it myself down the stairs and to the table. I was so relieved to have that over!
Well, thanks for reading my long post and checking out my cake pictures!

Ashley, would you post your cake in your photos so that I can get a closer look? I stress doing anyone's wedding cake and I can't imagine doing my own ... can't imagine ever getting married again, but still!

WOW! Amazing job! I made my cake too - the fact that it's not on here says all you need to know I still think I would do it again, though. Congratulations!
Your cake is beautiful! I am getting married this Saturday (6/6) and I'm not doing my cake. Originally I planned to do it, but I changed my mind. Again, yours is lovely.
You have proven it CAN be done. Good job.

Thanks all! You guys helped make it possible. I couldn't have done it without everyone's help.
Congrats, icedtea! Hope all goes well and you can enjoy your day.
Awesome! I doff my at to you!
That's brave. My daughter wanted me to do hers, but I had way too much on my plate to tackle that as well. We opted for my friend to do it. 3 teirs high with 4 stair cases coming off to an 8" square with a stacked 6" round.
Great job! The cake is beautiful! My daughter asked me to do hers, but then met a guy at school, and is getting married there! I have to go down several days before the wedding, and will be staying in a hotel. Add to that, my husband said NO! so we settled. I am going to make monogrammed cookies for the wedding, then a cake for their "home reception" two weeks later!
