I have read somewhere that you can use real pure cocoa butter and mix it with gel food coloring to paint on fondant like a canvas. Has anyone ever tried this and does it work? Can you buy pure cocoa butter at the grocery store? Is there something else you can use to paint on fondant?

Actually you need to use oil-based food coloring, not regular gel colors. They won't blend with the cocoa butter. You can also buy pre-colored cocoa butter (this is what i do, for the sake of convenience). You just sit the bottles in hot water to liquefy the cocoa butter and then squeeze onto a palette and paint away! I get mine from www.chefrubber.com But I really only use this technique for painting on chocolate.

To paint on fondant I just use liquid gel colors straight up, or gel pastes thinned with a little alcohol.
