Hi there! I am new to this site (I found it on the Charm City Cakes website!)

I am addicted to Duff and his show. I have seen them 'painting' designs on cakes and want to know what they are using? Is it just food coloring? What about when they use silver to add 'chrome' accents to the car/truck cakes they create?

I am asking because I have an order for a truck cake for a 40th birthday, and want to make it look as realistic as possible. I have used the luster dust from Wilton, but when I watch the show, it almost seems like they use some kind of paint.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

mix lustre dust with vodka. It makes a paint like medium and the alcohol evaporates.

I mix dusts or the gel colours with extract, same thing as alcohol it evaporates. I found the nu silver luster dust looks great as chrome.

Thanks for the info Misdawn and dutchy1971! But I have a slight dilemma - I have not seen nu silver. Where would I be able to get it? Does Wilton carry it?

Thanks! icon_confused.gif

Wilton doesn't carry nu silver. You would probably have to go to cake supply shop for that. The wilton silver will work for you, but you won't get the really bright silver shine. It will look like your 'chrome' has dulled a bit.

I used silver airbrush spray to paint on a cake yesterday. It was a good silver did need 2 coats though. Just another option for you. I've also used the silver luster and it worked well.

Either way you will likely need to order online or go to a supply shop.

sorry not sure what brand mine is. I know it's not Wilton. I got it at my local supply shop. I'll dig it out and find the name for you. I have to say it looked good as chrome on a cake I did this week.

EDIT: linneas cake and candy supplies is the brand

They carry it just not online yet. Call them. They have every color.
They will ship.

Thanks all for the tips! Living in Western Canada, there really isn't any good places to get cake supplies unless you have a business. I only do this as a side job! Wholesalers aren't willing to deal with general public!

But I will see what I can do with the luster dust and vodka mix.

Thanks Everyone! thumbs_up.gif
