Hi all,

I am new to CC and have a question. I am looking at opening up a cake store/bakery in California. I am attending the Wilton Master Course In Aug and am looking into opening my business before the end of the year.

Does anyone know if you have to have a baking certificate from a school to open your own bakery? I don't want to get started and then find out I have to attend some Culinary school first.

Thank you for all your help. Elizabeth

Welcome to CC!

The first place you need to go is your local city or town hall, who can direct you to people to talk about zoning, licencing, health and training requirements. Every municpality is different.

I don't live in CA but you do not need a culinary degree to own or run a bakery.

You will want to talk with your state or county health department to see what the requirements are for running a bakery. You will need to know whether you can do it from home or if you have to rent commercial space. I'm pretty sure that CA does not allow home bakeries.

Hope that helps!
