Raise 3 D Car Up Off Board

How do you do this so that the cake does not break? A board smaller than the one the cake will be placed on....with pop lids glued on that board......I have that, but wouldnt that cause the cake to crack? If the support board that raises car is betewwn tires and little shorter than the length, would that work? TY

I made a lowrider cake - see pic

I cut into the cake approx 1/2 inch all the way around. I also cut it about 1/2 inch high (you could probably cut it higher). It gives the appearance of the cake being off the board. I also made wheels from rice crispies - I should have coated them with buttercream.

It was my first attempt and have learned!!!!
