Fish Wearing Grad Cap In All Buttercream...where To Start?

Ok i just got this order and I've kinda got an idea but she wants it in all buttercream. My idea would work much better in fondant. So how would you go about making this??
She mentioned something about Mr Limpet wearing glasses and a grad cap. I've never made a carved cake before let alone a grad cap wearing fish! Its only going to serve about 20 so I'm thinking of stacking 8" rounds? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
I have no idea how they expect you to make a grad cap in buttercream for a 3d cake. Even RBC would be super soft. Have you told them this?
sometimes the customer has an idea that might not be realistic...maybe you should try a FBCT instead?
I would mention to them that if she wants it wearing a grad cap that at least the fish & cap have to be fondant or gum paste. There are cool cakes of fish coming up out of water (cake) in the gallery and you can easily make one of those wearing a grad cap. Do a search for fishing.
in my pics i have a fish cake it would be easy to add the hat but its fondant maybe explain that you need to use fondant maybe if you offer to use mmf and tell that its tastier the the canned stuff. otherwise good luck
