I'm trying to construct a Mario Bros. head out of RKT and after making him, his head started to crack off of the dowel (BC SPS dowel) I used after about 30 minutes. . I compacted and rolled & squished the RKT as tight as possible, almost no holes or bumps were visible, very smooth and solid. My worry is if I make it again, it's just to heavy to withstand the weight of the gumpaste on it. Do many of you use styro? I try to use all edible items when constructing a cake, but I'm afraid this time I'm going to have to use styro. Any advice? THe cake needs to be decorated on Thurs. And I have to have one arm up in the air too, help!!!!
You have to put the dowel in while it is still warm and pliable and then let the "head" cool and set-up. How large is the head and how long did you wait before you tried to stand it up and cover it? Also, be sure that you don't push the dowel all the way through the "head". The top portion that is solid should help hold it together.
