im a new baker and i need some tips on how to make a nice looking cake, the problem is that the limit of my cake experience is out of a box cake mix. I'd like any advice people can offer

Welcome to CC!

Actually you should try the kakeladi's original WASC recipe. It's from a box mix with tweaks added. I find it very good and easy to work with.

For greasing my pans, I usually use equal amounts of shortening, oil and flour mixed togeter. I always had perfect edges everytime I use it.

Are you planning on making buttercream cakes or fondant?

welcome! i think you need to be much more specific with your questions, theres loads of advice but you might know it or not be at the stage where you need it. read all the boards, as you will get a lot of answers that way too.
