what do you use to adhere ribbon around cake so the water marks don 't show through (on fondant)?
I was taught to use egg white only, but I have used both RI and edible glue (like what you use for GP flowers etc).
One thing I tend to do though, is wrap the ribbon around the cake, then put a small amoutn of whatever 'glue' where it joins. Stick a pin through the ribbon into the cake to hold it in place until dry. I usually place a bow or flowers or something over the join when its dry.

and be sure to put a little strip of wax paper under the ribbon so you don't get stains on it (from the oil/fat in the fondant or icing)
