Could someone be kind enough to help me find the best kind of cake for carving. I want to make a guitar cake for my husbands birthday.

if you use mixes, have a look at the wasc recipe on here.
i like a victoria sponge, http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/victoriaspongewithst_90309.shtml
other people use pound cakes, or maderia cake.

There's also a recipe here called 'Durable Cake for Carving'. I use it often.
Whatever you use, make sure you stick it in the freezer for a bit to firm it up... less chance of crumbles and breakage that way!
