I am confused I thought feathers were not safe around food but I keep seeing them on cakes. So are they safe?

We were told not to use them for preschool crafts

They are not food safe. They are treated with stuff to keep critters from making their abode with/in the feathers. They should not be near food. But lots of people use them.
