Am making a Batman cake for my grandson and would prefer not to use the star method of covering it - I saw one here which was beautiful and it was smoothed over by using a sponge. Would you cover the cake in buttercream and then smooth it over with the sponge? And is there a special sponge that you would use.
Thanks for any ideas.

Smoothing it with a patternless paper towel works best, Viva makes these that's why you may see the Viva Method mentioned when smoothing bc. You can also use wax/parchment or clean computer paper. There are a couple of youtube videos that show you how to do this. I would also recommend getting Sugarshack's" Perfecting the Art of Buttercream DVD.

I'll go and look for those youtube videos for you and post them here.
