I am looking for a good sugar recipe and a frosting that is not too sweet.
A popular recipe is the No Fail Sugar Cookie. The icing is a matter of preference. Antonia74 RI and Toba's glace' are two of the most popular.

i recommend the dark chocolate rolled sugar cookie recipe honeydukes posted. i think its the bitterness of the cocoa which cuts down on the sweetness.
i've found that the nfsc aswell as the peggy porschen vanilla sugar cookie recipes are very sweet. and adding icing on top of it makes them even sweeter... too much for my liking (it has even been a bit slow to get people in my household to gobble them up cos they are so sweet). i recommend cutting down on some of the sugar in the cookie dough
