Hi allabout, I think once they have made the towers, they have cut a strip of paste and using a square cutter, have made the square edging and pasted t around the tower.

By the way, that particular cake was done by one of CC member's. You can PM her and ask any questions. icon_smile.gif

Hi Bashini many thanks. I've covered each cake in dark grey a thin layer then was going to wait till it dried a little and add the cobblestone effect in pieces like i've done for box cakes? then do the edging along on the top - just a little worried that the top of the cobblestone on the sides of the cake needs to be a little higher and will start to flop over if you see what i mean? or whether to do the cobblestone just to the height of the sides of the cake then make the square cut out poke up a little higher? The turrets are drying so hopefully be firm enough to do the square cutter round top of those. One other question I'm doing the moat in RI with piping gel - do you think that will soften the base of the turrets too much or be ok? thank u icon_smile.gif I PMd that person not heard yet but they may not be on line just yet. Just seem to have had trouble deciding on what to do first and so forth!

Hi allabout, with what did you make the towers? Since you are using RI and then a this layer of piping get, I don't think the turrets go soft. If you use all piping gel, then it would go soft.

I would do the cobble stone effect up to the height of the tower, not above that. It would have been easier if you had the cobble stone effect mat. icon_smile.gif Also I would do the square edging with flower paste, so it would dry hard.

Hi Bashini, I made the towers out of pastillage. I iced the cakes yday and did the top part in flower paste as u suggested, and let it dry a little and put on with RI. I will put the towers in place today I think and then fill with the RI and let it set a little and add piping gel just a little on top for shine? I luckily had ordered the big cobblestone mat and it arrived on monday thankfully! I had a little one but it was rubbish and had a hard edge so left lines all over. thank u for your help. hop it stays put so much icing!

Its good that you made the towers with pastillage and hope you made them a bt thicker too? I would wait till the RI dry completley and then put a very thin layer of piping gel. icon_smile.gif

Which mat is this and where did you order it from? I've only ever seen the small ones which are absolutely rubbish.

On another note... I'm getting sooo nervous about the cake show tomorrow. Im entering the class where the cake has to be entirely edible. I want to use
Glitter on it but they have reclassified glitter to non toxic so it's not edible but eating it won't harm you >icon_sad.gif I'm going to ring them in a bit and see if I would get disqualified over something like that.

I might post a picture in a bit, I'm not loving it at the moment.

Hi Lisa that is a shame about the glitter, but I bet the cake is fantastic. I can't wait to see it! don't be nervous I bet it is going to be great. It's worth checking you know how strict some can be over little things. I got marked down from gold to silver over wrong board size! eek.

The mat is brill its about 19" x 23" I bought it from Surbiton Sugar Art http://www.surbitonart.co.uk/ - it's under texture mat cobblestone. lovely and big! icon_smile.gif look forward to the picture!

I got carried away and didnt let it dry and stuck the towers in first.. they are reasonably thick i just hope they don't dissolve overnight! I didn't put too much round the bottom icon_sad.gif

Do you have any other tips while I've got time to change things if I need to? What was wrong with your board?

I went to the local cake shop and bought edible art and Karen Davies magic sparkles, the lady in the shop assured me they were edible. I couldn't see anywhere on the packaging where it says for decoration only so fingers crossed icon_smile.gif

I'm happier with it now but i don't know whether to put my sugar birds on it. One of them has a messy join so I'm in two minds. The other option would be sugar bubbles and chocolate spheres on the top. Is it better to have a slightly messy harder technique or a quite clean easier technique?? Hmmm...

A bit fell off and make a dent which I couldn't fix but it's not very big, and left 3 black sploges which I could fix!!
On a plus note the bit that fell off I wasn't 100% happy with the replacement I'm much happier with!

I just finished mine tonight, I thought if it's got to be all edible I'll make it so my family can eat it afterwards. Only took me 4 days. It's chocolate cake with strawberry liqueur and champagne buttercream.

I'm so nervous, keep thinking it'll fall apart in transit. I've got my repair kit packed and ready :S

I would definitely say keep it as clean as possible. I would prefer to be clean than messy and more technical but that's just me. My board was not big enough. Should have been 2" wider than the cake but it was only 1.5" - I did double board it and thought that would have been ok as final board was bigger but it wasn't. This was for a final exam by the way. edible art is totally edible as far as i'm aware and it's a really nice fine glitter too. How is it going with the cake? icon_smile.gif wishing u lots of luck

The cake is fabulous well done! I'm sure you are going to do well. When do you find out the judges decisions? I know it's so tempting to buy so much but worth it for a few bargains. I wish I had gone this year but thought I would give it a break this year and go next time icon_smile.gif

Tomorrow morning I hope. My only concern is that my vision wasn't quite as literal as the other entries eg Christmas trees, father christmas, snow scenes, reindeer stables etc... There were a couple of entries where they did alot of royal icing techniques and for competitions I believe they are favoured. Also, you weren't allowed to write a description of the techniques you used so I'm thinking mine will get overlooked.

I don't know why I'm stressing because there's nothing I can do about it now lol
