My First Gumpaste Rose...well??
Decorating By mamafrogcakes Updated 19 Aug 2005 , 3:22am by crouton800
Made my first gumpaste rose tonight! I'm pleased because it at least looks like a rose! First things first right?? Aside from that, how does it look. Any tips?? I used the Wilton gumpaste kit and I know sooner or later I'm going to try to branch out to do my own thing but was wondering what others do. Also, how would I make this wider??
Thanks!!!
Your rose looks awesome! I just started making them last week in my Course III Wilton class too! They're lots of fun!
I'm not sure how to make it wider, but I know according to the wilton class, we were supposed to dip a toothpick in shortening and then stick the rose bud on the end to dry on before we started layering our petals on. I will likely not to that again since it was difficult to keep the "roses-in-progress" from popping off that toothpick! Argh! I tried a few flowers using Colette Peters books and my soon to be SIL also showed me to use wire bent into a hook at the end instead of the toothpick!
Great job!
Looks good to me! The only advice I have would be to make the tear drop first & let it dry, then make the 1st part of the petals & let them dry & so forth. It's easier if you let each layer dry. Plus you can spend more time shaping the rose when the bottom layers are dry. I love making the fondant flowers. I do them when I'm watching a movie~ So much fun!
Looks beautiful! I'm afraid to try gp roses. How long does it have to dry between layers?
THat is an awesome first rose!!!! I've been making mine for a long while and mine still look like they were made by someone with all thumbs. Good for you!
I bought the Wilton Gumpaste Kit a while back. I could not figure out how to make it work. The gumpaste was so stiff I couldnt roll it out. I threw it all away and thought that was something I didnt need to be doing. Now I want to learn to do gumpaste flowers because they are so pretty. Any ideas? Thanks MC
Does anyone know how to make a really big fondant rose?
Sherryb
Hi Sherryb,
When you mean big..how big? If you want a rose that can be made really huge, make an open rose..with stamens in the centre.
gosh i'm trying to think how to describe it... ok here it goes...
make rose petals in groups of 5 in increasing sizes. the more sizes and larger the petal the larger the rose. place each petal on the inside of a spoon..you'll need different sizes according to the petal size. when you lay the petal on the spoon, gently push back the tip of the petals over the spoon. do all these petals and try to dry them a bit. then with a shallow small rounded dish, place a square cut out of plastic ( or i guess wax paper) and place a dollop of royal icing on that. Then with your five largest petals place their points on this dollop. this is the outside petals of the open rose. then repeat with the next smaller 5 petals - dollop of icing first. until you get to the smallest of your 5 petals, you can curve these a bit. the last dollop of royal icing will hold a bunch of short stamens. just push a few stamens into the royal icing.
I wish I had a picture of this but I don't. I'll try to do one and show you using photos. I find it much easier with visuals...but it won't be so soon because i'm tied up for the next week.
hope the instructions are clear enough.
