I've seen some wonderful lettering on cakes, so I purchased alphabet cutters and I could not get them to work. I could not get the letters out of the cutters without destroying the letters. icon_cry.gif These cutters are clear plastic and the letters are in rows, for a total of 4 separate rows. What am I doing wrong? Is it that the fondant is too soft? Is there a brand that is better than others? The ones I have are FMM and are script.

Can someone tell me the trick to using these?

Edna has a tutorial on's great, I just watched it the other night. I don't have a link, but just search "Edna Fondant" and it should pop up.

Thank you. I will look them up. I was so looking forward to using them on the last cake I made, but it was a disaster. So I resorted to using my Wilton letters. I would have done better if I had used icing.

I have a fmm alphabet cutter too, and that video by Aine helped me a lot. Basically you have to roll your gumpaste very thin, i mean very thin. And roll it shaping it in a strip, then you position the cutter horizontally, like forming a cross and press movingback and forth.

You need to dip the cutter in cornstarch, before any of this.
Then, to release to tap the cutter against the counter and it should come out very easy. With a knife, transfer to a flat surface, shape it and let dry.HTH

Ok, I'm going to try. I watched both videos (I like Edna) I will try both ways and see if I can get them to work. The girl I made the heart bday cake for now wants me to make her mom's cake for this WE. I will let you know if I can get them to work or if I am giving them to the kids as rulers. lol. icon_lol.gif
