I originally posted this in the "how do I" section, but it looks like this forum might be a better place....so here's the re-post:

My brother has asked me for a graduation cake for this May. He wants a Dallas Cowboy star with a graduation hat on it. I thought maybe I could start by using doug's template for a star....but how do I go about putting a gradutaion hat on it???? I want to have a good template before I attempt to take apart a cake, and my artistic abilites are...well..not that great!
Anyone have any ideas or templates they've used for graduation hats?

thanks,
melissa

I don't have a template, but if it were my task, I would create it from black fondant. A strip for the base (joined in a circle) and a square for the top. (don't forget the tassle!) Maybe have the hat on a star cookie that is standing up, iced like the dallas cowboys star. Then the cake can be whatever you want, not necessarily star shaped.

I'd make the mortar board out of chocolate (candy melts) and put it on a cupcake (just the crown part of the cupcake).
