please help me with food items that I can make that will give American kids a taste of Australia. My daughter's 1st grade class is studying Australia for International Day. I've made lemingtons, but am looking for other ideas. I'd also like to make more than just desserts so any ideas and recipes are greatly appreciated. Keep in mind that it's for 1st graders.

Not from Australia... But this is what I found...

Chocolate Crackles

Links to Australian/New Zealand cooking/baking recipe sites:

Not sure if all the AU ingredients are readily available in the U.S. But a run through the type of recipes you're looking for will immediately let you know if it's something you can replicate.

Don't forget the Anzac biscuits!!

The website JanH mentioned, taste.com.au is my absolute favorite recipe site. You'll find the anzac recipe there as well as a heap of other Aussie favourites.

Hope this helps, have a great time icon_smile.gif

Meat pies are always good to freak out the American taste buds icon_wink.gif I spent some time in California before I moved to Oz (from UK originally) and the kids we were staying with couldn't get their heads round savoury pies! (Must be served with tomato sauce on top!)

Agree with the vegemite sandwich - doesn't get more Aussie than that - can you get vegemite??

BBQ prawns (shrimp) and snags (sausages) also very Aussie.

Pavlova is simple to make too

Australian Womens Weekly is the food bible here so have a look through their recipes. Happy to translate and/or recommend substitutions on the ingredients if you need it, feel free to pm me!

Thanks Jan H. and those of you from Australia who gave me ideas. I had googled recipes before I posted, but it just helps to have someone tell you first hand what the traditional recipes are. I think I will try to make the meat pie and anzac biscuits for the class. I've always wanted to try vegemite since the 80s when Men at Work mentioned it in one of their songs, but it's not available here. Thanks again everyone.
