I will be making a 3-D football helmet for a customer this weekend. What would be the best way to make the face guard? Fondant/gumpaste? I thought about wrapping fondant around wire, but not quite sure how that works. Any suggestions?

On my Clemson helmet, I used wire with mmf wrapped around it. I don't use gumpaste. I don't have a reason that I don't use it, I just never have. I made a long roll of mmf and pressed it from the front and pinched it at the back. I covered the shorter sections of the face guard separately. I covered the ends of the wire with the mmf, but I did make sure to tell them that it was the only inedible part of the cake. I hope this makes sense.
