I have been asked to make a cake to look like an open ring box. There will be a fake diamond napkin ring that needs to go in it, but I'm not sure how to go about doing the actual box. Help please!!!

Well you could do a regular buttercream/fondant cake (your choice) and make fondant panels about an inch to two inches taller than your cake but the same width. Let them dry. When they are dry you just attatch them with a little icing and you have a box. For the lid, it can be either a one layer cake or you take your pan and cover the top in fondant for a gift box look. If you are talking about the curved ring boxes....I don't have an idea for that one. hmmm have to think on that one.
