Since I think gingerbread tastes a little like spice cake, what about cream cheese?
add cinnamon to taste to your bc and it is perfect everytime, it makes the bc a pretty tan color.
Believe it or not I've used a lemon buttercream on gingerbread -- awesome!! Not a real sharp lemon but more of a fresh lemon tasting buttercream. I adapted that from a recipe for gingerbread cake with fresh lemon glaze some years ago and it's been a big hit ever since!
