Ok this is gonna sound crazy but if you do a frozen butter cream transfer when it thaws out is it soft like buttercream again or does it stay kinda hard?

Yes it does. You only have seconds to get it from the freezer to the cake before it starts to melt and it will lose its form quickly. so work fast! You have to get it on your cake right away and gently and very lightly press it onto your cake and then immediately start peeling back the paper.
