I keep hearing eveyone talk about the dowel through the middle. How do you get the dowel that sharp that it goes through the cake and the boards?

Sharpen it with a pencil sharpener dedicated for dowels only.

You use a hammer to drive the dowel into the cake.

It will go through the board just like that. I know people do it but it amazes me that the cake does not make the board soft. Or just make the board bend onto the cake below it.

yes. I put it thru foamcore board like that LOL. It seems scary when you do it but it does work.
