When To Apply Pearl Dust

I am making some gumpaste decorations for a cake. I am going to paint the decorations with pearl dust. Do I wait until the decoration is dryed or can I paint it as soon as I form the decoration. Thank you.

Its better when the gumpaste is still fresh that way dust will adhere better but you can also do it on dry gumpaste but brush on shortening first and the dust will stay on.
