I'm entering a competition and can't use fondant...has anyone iced a dummy with buttercream only for competition, or do you suggest I just use a real cake. If using a real cake, is there a way to preserve it?

I just used a cake dummy for the first time with buttercream only, and it worked just fine. It was sure easier to ice than a real cake!!

I use buttercream on dummy cakes and it works just fine. I'd suggest using a dummy over real cake for competition anyway, unless of course it's a tasting competition as well.

I've covered dozens and dozens of styro dummies w/b'cream. Just treat is exactly as you would a real cake.
