i would use it as the perfect excuse to go buy yourself an airbrush.

Just thinking out loud here: Maybe a paintbrush for the woodgrain effect, then use a stiple brush for the color around the edge?

I must agree with cakesalot13. I'm not sure how you would do it any other way.

If you do decide to get an air brush be sure to get a good compressor. I now have two because my first comressor won't spray the shimmer colors. Of course, I used it for about 4 years before up grading.

Good luck!

If you dont want to buy the whole system, go to Michaels and get the one you can use with the cans.. Is affordable for a last minute, but at the end when you fall in love with the air brushing it might leave you wanting the whole system..

Take a small bowl and mix in a small amount of brown and yellow gel food coloring with vodka. Make sure it is a light color and brush the color all over your fondant coverd guitar. As it is dries gently run the brush over your fondant, give your brush a little wiggle as you go-that will give it a wood grain look. Then take a small bowl and mix in some more brown, yellow and and a small amount of red gel coloring to make a darker color and go around the sides and edges of your guitar using the same method. You will end up with a woodgrained guitar with a shine to it. I know is sounds strange but just give it a try of a small piece of fondant first, you will see what I am talking . Have fun with it.

just wanted to update... Here is the finished guitar, thanks to ssunshine564 for the tip.. As I could not go out and buy an airbrush, so everything was done by hand icon_smile.gif I choose to just go ahead and do the second guitar.

You can cover the guitar shaped cake with yellow fondant, let it dry then rub the outer side edges with shortening then brush on brown dust. The shortening let's the dust stay on and shine. Just an idea I've used on other things like flowers that has worked for me icon_smile.gif .
