How to you achieve a quilted pattern (diagonal) on a buttercream finish without destroying the surface? I would greatly appreciate any tips or even a photo if anyone would be so kind.

I've seen this done on buttercream. I wish I could remember so I could PM them personally...
I use skewers to make the impressions ... I just eyeball it.

I've done another where the diamond pattern is smaller (more diamonds across the cake), but I haven't reduced the size and loaded it yet.
