CAN U USE A POUND CAKE RECIPE FOR A REG. 2 LAYER CAKE? DOES IT WORK WELL?

Yes, and yes.

I just made one last week. It was a 12" pound cake with strawberries and SMBC for filling and SMBC on the outside, then covered in MMF. The couple wanted a strawberry shortcake, but needed it to hold up at an outside party. They absouletely loved it. It held together beautifully. I even used 2 bags of frozen strawberries with juice for filling, and it didn't leak at all. I used Alice's pound cake recipe I found here on CC.
