I hope it's ok to post an intro post here. I looked all over and couldn't find a place that said it was the right place to post, so I thought I'd try here.

Hi! My name is Tisha. I live in Oklahoma and I'm 100% new to cake decorating. I tried to find a Wilton class close to home, but they all meet during the day and I need one that meets either evenings or weekends. So, since I couldn't find a class, I decided to buy the starter kit and the class 1 booklet and try it on my own.

I made the rainbow cake and I also tried my hand at making some chocolate cupcakes w/ poured fondant this weekend. Both turned out pretty good for my first time, I think.

I have the pics uploaded on Flicker. Is it OK to post a link to Flicker on here?

Thanks, and I can't wait to read more and learn more from this site!

Thanks for the warm welcomes, everyone.

Here's the link to my Flickr page.

Just remember, it's my very first time, so be gentle. LOL But I do want honest opinions.

Tisha, I think you did very well with the rainbow cake. Your pattern transfer was good. You are right that practice makes a difference, but I think you did a good job. How did you like the taste of your first batch of butter cream and poured fondant?

Well, I've definately got a sugar tooth, so I thought they were good.

I kept about 1/2 of the leftover buttercream in the fridge and iced just a few of the small cupcakes and I think the buttercream was better after it had set for a day. I don't know if that's all in my mind or not, but it just tastes better.

The poured fondant tasted like my grandma's hard icing, so who knows... maybe that's how she made her hard icing. LOL

P.S. Thanks fo the compliments. I can't wait to practice more!

Hi and welcome,

It's a shame that the classes are not offered at night in your area, but you've come to the right place.

I've said this before to a "newbie", I've been doing cakes since the 80's (yes, I'm that old!). I've been on this site for almost 2 months and I've learned so much more here than at any of the Wilton or other classes I've taken in the past. I can't tell you how these gals and guys have helped me when I've needed something. This is the best resource, and yes it is very addictive. My husband calls it my "cakeporn" icon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gif

There are also a lot of great decorators here that have youtube tutorials which are very helpful too. I'm not suggesting that you not take the Wilton courses if they ever fit into your schedule, you definitely should, but in the meantime you have CC.

Good luck with all your baking projects and remember to have fun, it's a great adventure icon_smile.gif

Welcome and I hope you enjoy it here. All the people are more than willing to help and don't worry too much. I've never taken a class either but I would love to. There aren't any offered near me so I read alot and get good advice from this wonderful sight. I thought your cake and cuppies were great. Keep trying. icon_biggrin.gif

Welcome! cowboy.gif

I've still never mastered poured fondant. You did a great job. The rainbow cake is very pretty. Keep a good picture of that first cake -- you'll want to look back years from now and see where you started to how far you've come!!
