I am making cupcakes from a CC recipe that are lemon, rasp filling. I need to do a smaller cake and would like to do choc fondant but I think a choc cake is to much and wasnt sure if I would do a vanilla cake if this wouldnt please everyone at the party, since there is no choc.

Everyone loves chocolate. I would do the whole thing in chocolate. You could also try a red velvet cake, cream cheese filling and chocolate fondant. Yum!

I have never made cream cheese frosting. Does it hold up well under the fondant?

Yes, cream cheese frosting holds up great. It's smooth and creamy. There are several recipes for it her on CC. I've even added a little buttercream to it to firm it up, but that's not always necessary.
