Reheating Caramel Frosting

I've just made what I hope could be a caramel cream pecan cake (sidenote: has anyone ever heard of such a cake and is it similar to an italian cream cake?) My question is how do you successfully reheat caramel frosting? Right now I have it in a bowl resting on a pot of boiling water.
