Well I just had to share this with everyone, some of you may already know this, but I didn't. The last few weeks when I have been shopping at my local grocery store I always go by the bakery as I am sure most of us do, but anyway I noticed the roses on their cakes were just beautiful. So today when I went grocery shopping I stopped at the bakery admiring the roses again, well the lady behind the counter ask me if she could help me with anything and I said no I was just admiring the beautiful roses on the cakes and went on to tell her whoever did them had done a great job. Well to my amazement she said thanks they come in like that a machine makes them, well I just about lost my teeth, so I wondered is this what cake decorating is coming to, thanks for listening
Amazing irisinbloom.. I had no idea that machinery was doing roses even ... where is the decorator's profession going w/these types of businesses?? I mean all they do is ice, borders then throw on some roses .. sheesh .. they've gotten so impersonal .. it's all about money... which is fine, but goodness, don't you think it should mean something? don't you think it should have that personal touch?? I hope people like us take over the market and places like that eventually shut their doors .. that's my humble opinion
LOL, Iris, just this evening I was waiting for my order at the deli counter and was scoping out their sheet cakes. Not only were they small for a quarter sheet, but the roses looked a little odd and I wondered if they were made in a mold! I'm glad you posted this - now i know!
I went to a local cake supply store, and there were bags of ready made flowers...
Sheesh .. no personality lol at least we put feeling in our cakes
I wish I had that machine to make roses....I am really bad at making flowers!!!! I need to try Cheryl's roses on a stick!!! traci
I really like to make my own gum paste flowers, but I'm really bad at gum paste roses for some reason. I do but those occasionally, I don't feel guilty at all, I put a lot of myself into the design. So what if a couple of the flowers came from the supply store?
They're really easy to do traci.. try them out .. you'll like doing them that way better than on the flower nail
Oh, I've done them lots, I just can't seem to make a delicate looking rose. They are ok, and no one has ever complained about my gum paste roses. It's just me being critical of myself, and the pretty ones are only $2 each for big ones! Thanks for the encouragement though!
I tried the dowel roses on my basket cake and I must admit that I LOVE it! I still have to practice so that they don't look like cabbages however they were way easier than the flower nail.
Awww I'm glad you did some of them tripletmom
btw, I just love your avatar
Where is the tutorial for the dowel roses??? This is the first place I have heard about them and would LOVE to try them...my roses are passable-not alot to brag about the would love to have them jump out and say look at me---for the right reasons of course!!!
I'm definately going to try the dowel stick method! We did roses in class today and I failed miserably... even the drop flowers were terrible! My 2d tip drop flowers came out looking more like carnations than anything else, and my stiff icing was probably too stiff..... gonna have to practice! However. I will try the dowel sticl method this week cause next week is our last class..... already!
Here you go.
Thanks so much-I know what I will be doing tonight!!!
I have tried the stick method a couple of times, I need a whole lot of pratice, before I get one even half done it starts slidding down the stick
Your welcome.Let us know how it goes.
I never knew a machine could make roses!
I know when I'm doing a cake( it's mostly for ppl I know...I really try to put alot of myself into the cakes...) I like to make my cakes a personal signature... A machine... I just can't get over that...
next thing you know all they'll have to do is dump ingredients in a pan at the beggining, and it goes throgh this machine and comes out the end all iced and decorated....lol...
What a world we live in...lol...
make your icing thicker irisinbloom... that or chill it before you start using it .. when mine does that, I've either heated the icing in the bag up by holding it too long in my hand or I've made the icing too thin
I wondered why every rose looked so identical!
You can tell they're machine made. The bottom row which should be i think 7 petals? is one continuous piece. Kinda looks like a ribbon.
beachcakes that is exactly what they looked like just one continous row and so smooth and not even a jagged edge.
I think that creating your own things are a million times better than making them through a machine. Even if they don't come out perfect. The whole point is that a lot of hard work and thought went into that creation!! It's all about your passion!!
I've never tried gum paste flowers but want to.
Do they have a good taste or is it like fondant taste...bad?
