I have trouble getting my dark colors dark enough and the funky taste from adding so much dye eww. I have heard of using powdered food coloring but i am unsure of where to get it or how well it works. I can not start with chocolate BC for the person i am making cakes for is allergic to chocolate. If Anyone knows i would greatly appreciate some tips.

My Hobby Lobby store has some powdered colors - if you have one - try there. Or order online - just google powdered food color. My Hobby Lobby also has some "professional strength" liquid colors that are good for the reds - but you have to watch your icing doesn't get too thin.
