I've only just started baking seriously but i'm never too sure what I should put with what, like what goes best with with carrot cake, a spice cake or chocolate and peanut cake. what cream fillings will make a chocolate cake sickly etc.

There are so many yummy recipes out there but I'm reluctant to try them as I fear ruining a perfectly decent cake

so what are you're tried, true and tested combinations.

I really need some ideas to get me going, if we were talking cocktails you wouldn't be able to stop me!!!!
