Thank you Loucinda! I've always wondered how others were able to post pictures.

Here is my logo. I drew it in Illustrator. Image

I can't upload my image, if you want to look at it, check out my website...

EDIT -- uploading didn't work... I don't know if the image link will work either. I'm beginning to get very discouraged by all the technical issues with this site. icon_sad.gif

It looks like you're trying to link an image within your private vistaprint account, you may want to try uploading the image to a photo sharing site like flickr.com and link to that address instead.

Here's mine. I will do more than cakes so I didn't put a cake on it. Hopefully it doesn't stretch it too much. If it doesn't work, it's on my website. www.storybookbakery.com

My colors are purple and gold so when I found this elegant swirly thing on Vistaprint, I just added a book to the background.

Here's my logo and a couple questions for all of you. (Oops, having trouble uploading photo so here's a link to my website www.cakezilla.com )

1. What do you call yourself on your business cards - Designer, Master Baker, Owner, Artist, etc.?

1. Has anyone copyrighted or trademarked their logo or website? I would love some advice on this.

TFL!

Here is one I just made........not sure if I like it though. (feedback appreciated) Not sure if the text is hard to read or if it just looks weird?

It's the purple and black cake on my homepage

I know this is kind of cheating but I found a cute cake logo on vistaprint and use that on pretty much everything. I hope that's okay! I just wanted something fun and bubbly

It's at www.SaltCakeCity.com. I hope you like!

Bethasd, I didn't trademark the logo, in fact, I don't know if I can. I was looking into trademarking my name but it looked really expensive.

On my business card, I call myself the owner & caker. I've turned cake into a verb and a noun. icon_smile.gif

Our business cards all have two names: me as the Business Manager and my wife as Executive Pastry Chef. We also have an unpaid intern as an Associate Pastry Chef.

You don't need to do anything special to copyright your original creative works, they are automatically covered. You only need to register with the copyright office if you are going to file a suit. I looked into trademarking our logo, but after weighing the hassle and expense of a trademark application and the cost of defending the trademark against the possible benefits (some protection against the unlikely event of a business stealing our identity) I decided to pass.

If I were coming out with a line of packaged goods that would be sold nationwide the trademark protection might be worthwhile, but for limited sales in a local market the ROI just didn't cut it.

I was told that you can't refer to yourself as a pastry chef unless you have formal training...does anyone know if this is true? Also, what good companies are out there for order business cards? And can anyone recommend a good software for creating a logo independently...cant really afford to pay someone right now.

Hey PGBaker,
I use vistaprint (v-i-s-t-a-p-r-i-n-t just in case it gets blocked) and they often have 250 free business cards available. You can upload complete designs or add it in piece by piece. They are good quality business cards and they ship pretty fast. You can also create logos, I think, but I'm not positive. I hope that helps!

You don't necessarily have to have formal training but you do have to put in your time working in the industry before you become a chef. You would be a pastry cook until you work your way into a pastry chef position and then you could refer to yourself as a pastry chef. Nobody goes around enforcing this, of course, but you won't get any respect from others in the industry if you simply put on an apron one day and call yourself a chef. It's disrespectful to the people who spend years working their butts off doing 14+ hour shifts in restaurants to earn this title.

I have seen logo software you an buy but I've never used it.

I call myself Owner/Cake Designer. I think it's different than calling ourselves "pastry chefs" which conveys a greater understanding of all areas of pastry and not just cakes. I took culinary classes for 2 years and it would take me forever to master all areas of pastry. Not sure if I would ever try, because I hate baking bread. It takes forever!
