What is the difference between shimmer dust and luster dust. Cannot find luster dust in my area? Where do you get it? Thanks!
Do not get Wilton's it's awful.
Order on line. Just about every cake decorating site has it.
I prefer Luster Dust but I have used Shimmer Dust. I was doing my grandparents' anniversary cake and my cake supply store was out of the luster dust color I needed. So, I used the shimmer instead. I mixed it with vanilla vodka just as I do with luster and sprayed it on with my airbrush. It worked just fine. I would use it again.
Wilton now offers 2 products: shi-mmer dust and pe-arl dust.
Shi-mmer dust is nothing more than finely ground cake sparkles (gum arabic). It can be applied to a damp surface. It clumps and turns to a jelly when mixed with water or alcohol. I don't think it's a valuable cake decorating item at all and I use what I (unfortunately) have on hand to sprinkle on cupcakes or the tops of cakes. It can't even by dry-dusted onto fondant, like real luster dust.
Wilton Pe-arl Dust is an FDA approved luster dust. It works like any other company's dust and can be mixed with alcohol or lemon extract for painting. Wilton's only comes in limited colors, but they work fine.
European Cake Gallery makes luster dusts in many, many colors. They, unfortunately, call it shi-mmer dust, too, but it's NOT like Wilton's and it's NOT gum arabic. Their shi-mmer can be mixed with alcohol or extracts for painting.
European Cake Gallery is great! I got many new ones from them at ICES and love them. Good prices too.
