For those of you that make buttercream with shortening, do you recommend a specific brand? I have been using Crisco, but I'm wondering if it really makes a difference if you use a different brand.

After Crisco took out the trans fat I have tried many brands and swear by Bakerite. It gives the same results the old Crisco did.

I've heard that old Crisco was better, but since I've only recently started making buttercream I have no reference.

Can Bakerite be purchased at a grocery store or is it only at specialty shops?

It is at my local grocery. Some of the store brands still have some trans fat. You are sure to notice the difference.

I went hi-ratio and now use Alpine (get it at your cake supply shop, not grocery). Another good brand is Sweetex.
