Sorry I can't help but that cake is gorgeous. It looks like pleated fondant.

looks to me like pleated fondant also, which is a pain in the patootie!

i would guess that they covered the cake in fondant, then rolled out half circles that were much bigger over the front half (back too if the design repeated itself on that side also), pleated them, and then cut off remainder. so essentially, you would have at least two layers of fondant in those decorated areas.
