i'm painting fondant and i dont have any vodka on hand. what else could i use. i have whiskey but i can imagine that it would smell strong. could i use vanilla extract? please someone help me! it's a chocolate cake that is going to have chocoalte fondant so the coloring doesn't matter how dark it is. i thought about using lemon extract but i dont think the taste would go. ANY advice is REALLY REALLY appreciated... thank! icon_biggrin.gif

I use almond extract if I'm out of vodka. It would probably taste good with chocolate too, and it's clear.HTH!

First thing I thought of was RUM icon_biggrin.gif, but that has nothing to do with cake.

The best rule is to use the highest concentration of alcohol that you have available:
In booze, that would be, in general order: Everclear, vodka, gin, white rum

In extracts: Lemon (86% alcohol), vanilla (about 50%)

Lemon extract also has an oil component that helps hold the paint down better (less comes off on your hands & fewer smudges) and helps it to flow better yielding fewer clumps & streaks. It doesn't impart any flavor, just a nice smell. I use it almost all of the time--sometimes I mix it with the Everclear to get the best of all worlds.

I was thinking Gin. I could use any.....vodka, rum, gin. I like to keep my "liquor cabinet" well stock......err, that is for cake decorating of course (ha ha ha)
