I made some butter cream icing last night and it doesn't taste as good as it did last week.
I used store brand shortening and half butter with C & H powdered sugar but it tastes off, almost stale

Can anyone tell me if the shortening I used made the difference or was the sugar I bought stale?

I always sift my sugar but i don't know, something isn't right

It can be the shortening. Some store brands are not very 'clean' tasting. You can try adding some additional flavoring. Lemon and almond are both clear. Vanilla will make it taste better, but it won't be white-white.
I don't use clear vanilla because I hate the fake taste.

I use vanilla in my BC, but I also use hot coffee creamer, usually the flavoured kind (the liquid found in the fridge section of the grocery store). The flavour possiblities are endless!

Check the ingredients on the shortening. If it's got animal fat in it, that will make a wierd consistancy and strange aftertaste thumbsdown.gif
